Smart locks and electronic access control let you replace lost keys with codes, manage who comes and goes from your phone, and pull an audit log of every entry. We specialize in pairing the right device to the right door — not every smart lock fits every frame, and not every brand survives a real Staten Island winter.

Smart-lock technology has changed what a residential or commercial door can do. We install Wi-Fi deadbolts, keypad locks, fingerprint locks, and full access-control systems for offices, multi-unit buildings, and homes that want to leave keys behind.

Because we set up and support the system in person, we can match the right hardware to your door, your network, and the way you actually live or work.

Smart locks are not all created equal. The same brand can have a top-shelf product and a throwaway product on the same store shelf, separated by a model number. We've installed and serviced thousands of smart locks across Staten Island, and we will tell you straight which models we trust on a real door, in a real climate, with a real Wi-Fi network — and which ones we've stopped installing entirely.

We also design and install full electronic access-control systems for offices, medical practices, schools, gyms, warehouses, and multi-tenant buildings. That includes prox cards, key fobs, mobile credentials, schedule-based access, remote unlock, audit logging, and integration with alarm and video systems.

Hardware + install packages typically run $350–$900 per door depending on brand and integration.

Why Minkel

What makes our smart locks service different.

Brand-agnostic advice

We sell and service Yale, Schlage, August, Kwikset, Alfred, Mul-T-Lock, and more — we recommend based on your door, not our margin.

Real Wi-Fi integration

Tested with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Airbnb, and major property-management platforms.

Professional install

Doors and strikes are shimmed and aligned so motors don't burn out — a major cause of smart-lock failure.

Ongoing support

We are five minutes away if a firmware update locks you out or a battery contact corrodes.

Future-proof selection

We avoid brands that have a track record of abandoning firmware or shutting down cloud services.

Mechanical backup planned

Every install includes a documented backup-entry plan so you are never stranded by a dead battery or a Wi-Fi outage.

Local code expertise

Fire-code and life-safety compliance built into every commercial access-control design.

Training included

We do not leave until every user — family, staff, super, or guest — knows how to use the system.

How it works

Our smart locks process, step by step.

  1. 01

    Site survey

We measure your door, check Wi-Fi coverage at the lock, and confirm power options.

  2. 02

    Hardware selection

You pick from two or three models we know perform in your exact setup.

  3. 03

    Installation

We mount, align, enroll users, and connect to your hub or app.

  4. 04

    Training

We walk every household member or staff member through codes, app use, and battery alerts.

  5. 05

    30-day check-in

We follow up after a month to tune codes, schedules, and any firmware updates that rolled out post-install.

When to call us

Common situations we handle every week.

If your situation sounds like any of these, give us a call. Most can be quoted in a 30-second conversation.

  • Short-term rental or Airbnb owner who needs auto-generated guest codes
  • Office that wants to retire physical keys without going fully cloud
  • Family that wants to track when kids get home from school
  • Property manager scaling access across multiple units
  • Homeowner tired of hiding a spare key under the mat
  • Cleaning crew, dog walker, or contractor that needs scheduled access
  • Medical or dental practice with HIPAA-driven access logging
  • Gym or studio with 24/7 member access via fob or app
  • Coworking space issuing temporary credentials by the hour or day
  • Multi-tenant building replacing a lost master key system
Residential vs. commercial

Choosing between a consumer smart lock and a commercial access-control system

Consumer smart locks (Yale, Schlage, August, Level) are designed for one to three doors and a handful of users. They are app-driven, run on AA or proprietary batteries, and are perfect for homes, small offices, and short-term rentals.

Commercial access-control (Salto, Brivo, Openpath, HID) is built for many doors, many users, and tight permissioning. Credentials are managed from a cloud or on-premise dashboard, doors are wired or battery-powered, and the system can enforce time-based access, anti-passback, and emergency lockdown.

We routinely install hybrids — a commercial access-control front door with consumer smart locks on interior offices, or a single Salto network with mobile credentials for tenants and physical fobs for staff. We will scope it to what you actually need, not the most expensive option.

Short-term rental playbook

Smart locks for Airbnb and short-term rental owners

Auto-generated, time-limited codes for each booking — created and revoked automatically via integrations with Airbnb, Vrbo, Hospitable, and Guesty.

Per-cleaner and per-vendor codes with their own schedules, so you know who entered and when.

Battery monitoring and remote unlock so a guest never has to wait on a property manager.

Tamper alerts so you are notified the moment someone tries to defeat the lock — particularly useful for unattended properties.

What we will not install

Smart locks we have stopped recommending

Any lock with a track record of cloud shutdowns that bricked customer hardware.

Cheap import keypad locks sold under multiple white-label names — they fail on cold mornings and have weak motor housings that wear out within a year.

Locks that require a paid subscription just to use the app or generate codes.

We will tell you exactly why we won't install something — and what we would install in its place at a similar price point.

Questions, answered

Smart Locks FAQs.

Do smart locks work without Wi-Fi?

Yes — most we install work as standalone keypads. Wi-Fi or a bridge is only required for remote access and logs.

Will a smart lock work on my old Staten Island door?

Usually, yes. We carry adapters for non-standard backsets and can install a strike-plate shim when needed.

How often do batteries need replacing?

Most consumer smart locks run 6–12 months on AA batteries. We install low-battery alerts so you're never surprised.

Can I keep using a physical key as backup?

Yes. We typically install models with a keyed override so you're never locked out by a dead battery or dead phone.

Are smart locks safe from hackers?

Reputable brands use bank-grade encryption and are far harder to defeat than a standard pin-tumbler cylinder. The most common failure is a weak app password — we set strong defaults during install.

What happens during a power or internet outage?

Smart locks are battery-powered, so they keep working through power outages. Internet outages disable remote unlock but keypad and key entry still work normally.

Can you integrate with my existing alarm system?

Yes — most major access-control panels integrate with Honeywell, DSC, Bosch, and Alarm.com systems. We coordinate with your alarm company on commissioning.

Do you support Apple Home Key and tap-to-unlock?

Yes. We install Aqara, Schlage, and Level locks that support Apple Home Key, plus Yale and August models that support Google and Alexa home ecosystems.

How do you handle staff turnover?

Codes and credentials are revoked from the app or dashboard in seconds — no rekey required, no recall of physical keys, no risk of a forgotten copy.
